"Más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo." My abuela said it with a smile, usually right after she saw something coming that nobody else did. The devil knows more because he's old, not because he's the devil.
I didn't really understand that dicho until life forced me to.
The day I thought my world ended
I was in my 50s, a school principal with 15 years invested in my district. I had the support to become the next assistant superintendent, and the people at the top did not like that. Stories started to circulate, stories that were not true.
Then one day I was called to the district office and told I no longer had access to my office. I was forbidden to speak to anyone on my campus. My six figure career was gone in one meeting.
I won't pretend I bounced back quickly. For almost three years I blamed myself, and I hid. If you are in a season like that right now, Hermosa, please hear me. Your grief is valid, and healing has its own timeline.
But when I finally went inward and started looking at my successes instead of my shortfalls, everything changed. I trained in Watsu, became a Reiki Master, a yoga therapist, and a meditation teacher. When a loyal yoga student asked me to take her deeper, I listened. That became my first Yoga Healing Retreat, and my first five figure month.
Looking back, those three years of hiding were not wasted. They were the season when my wisdom took root. Every lesson from the classroom, every hard conversation with a parent, every budget I balanced as a principal came with me into my new business. I didn't start over from zero. I started over from experience.
My age didn't define me. What I did with my years did.
3 ways your age makes you more strategic
Many MujerPreneurs over 50 believe they started too late. Here is why the opposite is true.
1. You recognize patterns faster. You have watched people, businesses, and plans succeed and fail for decades. You can sense when a client is not the right fit, when a deal sounds too good, or when a launch needs more time. A younger entrepreneur has to learn that the hard way. You already paid that tuition.
2. You know what to say no to. Strategy is mostly about focus. Experience teaches you that you cannot chase every trend, every app, and every opportunity. Wisdom gives you the courage to choose one clear path and walk it. That discernment saves you money, time, and energy. Before every new commitment, ask yourself, does this move me toward the one thing I am building?
3. Your story builds trust. People don't buy from the most polished person. They buy from the person they trust. Every season you survived, the losses, the reinventions, the comebacks, is proof that you understand real life. Your story is not something to hide. It's your credibility. Tu historia es tu medicina.
Try this today
Grab a notebook and give yourself ten quiet minutes. Write down three answers. No edits, no judgment, just honesty.
The hardest thing you have ever survived, and what it taught you
One thing people always come to you for help with
One problem you can see coming before others do
Read your answers out loud. That is not a list of random experiences. That is your wisdom, and it is the foundation of a business only you can build.
If you want to go deeper, I created a free worksheet called the Wisdom Inventory that walks you through it step by step.
You're not late, you're loaded
The young ones may know the newest platform. But you know people. You know how to lead. You know how to get back up. Mujer, you have done harder things than learning a new platform.
It's not about how many times you fall. It's about how many times you give up. And the fact that you're reading this tells me you haven't given up yet.
Your age isn't a delay, Hermosa. It's your strategy.
