The Shiny Object Tax, What Every MujerPreneur Pays When She Chases the Next New Platform

She called me close to eleven at night, and I could hear it in her voice before she said a single word about her business.
Tired. Not sleepy tired, Hermosa. The other kind.
She had been at her kitchen table since her kids went down, moving her email list from one platform to another. Rebuilding forms. Re-tagging subscribers she had spent three years earning. Recreating a welcome sequence she had already perfected, one she used to be proud of. Sixty days earlier, someone on a webinar had promised her that this new tool would grow her list while she slept.
Sixty days later, the list was the same size. She was still paying for the old platform out of habit. And she was sitting in the dark, feeling like a beginner in the middle of her own business.
She thought she had a strategy problem. Ay, mi amor, no. She had an attention problem, and nobody had ever named it out loud for her.
El precio que nadie te dice
The subscription was forty-nine dollars a month. That was never the real price.
Every new platform carries a tax that nobody advertises, and I call it the shiny object learning curve. It is the hours you spend learning an interface you did not need, moving a list that was already fine where it was, rebuilding what you had already built, and feeling small inside work you used to feel powerful in.
Hustle culture tells you this is momentum. Movement feels like progress. A brand new dashboard feels like a brand new beginning, and I understand the pull of that feeling, because starting over is the only kind of relief some of us were ever taught.
But let me name it the way my abuelita would have named it, plainly and with love. You are not investing in growth. You are paying with your energy to stand still.
And the deepest cost is not the setup, Chula. It is the stop.
Every migration pauses the actual work, the emails, the offers, the relationships, the listening. While you are learning a new tool, nobody is being served. Your list does not grow while you sleep. Your list grows while you work, and you are not working. You are migrating.
Movimiento no es progreso
Here is the uncomfortable part, and I say it as someone who has watched it for years.
When the algorithm changes, when engagement dips, when some guru whispers that the platform you chose is already dead, the reactive Mujer reaches for the new thing. The new thing feels like control. Usually it is just a louder distraction wearing better lighting.
I have watched brilliant MujerPreneurs confuse restlessness with strategy. The tools pile up. The half-learned platforms collect like abandoned hobbies in a closet. And underneath all of it hums a low anxiety, that sensation of always catching up, never quite landing anywhere, never quite arriving.
That anxiety is not a character flaw. That is your body speaking to you in the only language it has. Your third chakra, your solar plexus, your seat of power and decision, is telling you something true.
You are not behind, Hermosa. You are scattered. Those are two completely different diagnoses, and they call for two completely different medicines.
Tres preguntas antes de saltar
In what I call the peaceful decision culture, we do not ask, is this new thing good. Of course it is good. Everything is good at the demo. Everything is beautiful in the sales page.
We ask three harder questions, and we ask them slowly, with our hand on our belly and our feet on the floor.
One. Does this serve the strategy I already chose, or a strategy I am hoping will magically appear.
Two. What is the true cost. Not the price, the learning curve, the migration, the attention this will eat for the next six months of my life.
Three. Will I still be using this a year from now. Or will I be right here again, restless, hungry for the next hit.
Sit with those. Do not answer them fast, because fast is exactly how you got here.
La constancia es la estrategia
The Mujeres I have watched build real wealth online are not the ones who tried every platform. Not one of them.
They are the ones who picked a lane early and went deep. One email platform, learned until it becomes an extension of her hand. One audience, cared for until it becomes a comunidad. One offer, refined for years instead of abandoned at month three.
That is where the compounding lives. That is where the money lives too, though nobody puts that on a webinar slide.
And I want to be very clear, because this is not passivity. Es exigente. The peaceful decision culture asks you to feel the pull of the shiny new thing and to not move, to tolerate the boredom of depth, to let your yes mean something because your no meant more.
The cost of shiny objects was never the money, mi amor. It was you. Your attention, your momentum, your paz.
And when you stop reacting, something beautiful walks in and sits down beside you, the quiet confidence of a Mujer who knows exactly what she is building and why.
No es que no veas las oportunidades. Es que ya elegiste.
It is not that you do not see the opportunities. It is that you already chose.
Depth beats novelty, every single time. Choose once, go deep, and let the compounding do the loud work while you stay quiet and rooted.
There is one more thing, and I left it out of this piece on purpose.
It is the practice I walk a Mujer through when the pull of the shiny new thing is strongest, the one that turns a restless yes into a rooted no, in about ten minutes, without a single spreadsheet. I do not put it out on the timeline. It lives somewhere quieter, because the Mujeres who go looking for it are usually the ones who are already ready for it.
