Sharing Your Scars, Not Your Wounds: How Your Journey Can Empower Your Business
There’s something deeply powerful about sharing your story with others—especially when that story involves your scars, not your wounds. We all face challenges, but it's the way we navigate those challenges and grow from them that truly connects us with others. In my own journey, I’ve discovered that sharing my scars—those marks left after overcoming adversity—has allowed me to connect more deeply with my audience, build my coaching business, and create authentic relationships that go beyond surface-level interactions.
From School Principal to MujerPreneur: How My Scar Transformed Me
For years, I was a school principal, running a school of 1,500 students, 125 teachers, 50 support staff, and over 4,000 parents and community members. It was an incredibly demanding role, but I was thriving and making a significant impact. However, things took a drastic turn when I was falsely accused of wrongdoing by two women I considered part of my support staff.
The accusation hit me like a wrecking ball. It attacked my integrity—my number one value—and left me in a place where I felt both devastated and completely betrayed. For a long time, I couldn’t bring myself to share anything about it. I had to process the pain of being accused of something I never thought I would be. But over time, and with healing, I began to realize something powerful: I wasn’t just running a school—I was running a business. The experience taught me how to manage finances, handle budgets, and creatively secure funding. These skills transferred seamlessly into the work I do today as a coach.
Lessons from My Scar
The biggest lesson I learned was that the daily doings of being a principal—things like managing a budget, solving problems with limited resources, and securing support for essential services—were all transferable to running my coaching business. As a leader, I was already honing business skills, albeit in a different environment. I just didn’t realize it at the time.
When I transitioned into entrepreneurship, I understood how to manage the money coming in and going out, how to find creative solutions when faced with obstacles, and how to constantly adjust and grow my business based on feedback and new challenges. These are the very same skills I now use daily in my coaching business to serve my clients effectively.
From Wounds to Scars: The Power of Vulnerability
For the longest time, I didn’t share any of my story. I kept my scars hidden because I felt the wound was still too raw. I didn’t want to show vulnerability, especially when it involved something so deeply personal to me—my integrity. But once I understood the difference between a wound and a scar, I began to embrace my story.
A wound is something that’s still painful and unresolved. It’s something that triggers emotions and memories of hurt, leaving you stuck in the past. A scar, on the other hand, is what’s left after the healing process. It’s a mark that shows you’ve survived and grown from a painful experience. It’s something you can share as a symbol of resilience, strength, and transformation.
By sharing my scar—how I overcame the false accusations, rebuilt my life, and started a business—I’m able to inspire and relate to my audience in a way that’s authentic and empowering. People don’t want to hear about your wounds, the part of your story that’s still unresolved or causing you pain. They want to hear about your scars—the lessons you’ve learned, the strength you’ve gained, and how you’ve used those experiences to help others.
Encouragement for Your Journey: Embrace Your Scar
If you’re reading this and thinking about your own scars, I want to encourage you to embrace them. Celebrate the journey you’ve been through, even if it wasn’t easy. You are stronger now because of it. Sharing your scar is not about airing your dirty laundry or staying stuck in the past; it’s about showing others that they too can overcome their struggles. Your story is an inspiration, and it can build trust with your audience in a way nothing else can.
So, how do you start sharing your scar? It’s simple: learn the difference between a wound and a scar, celebrate your scar, and then share it with your audience—despite the fear of judgment. I understand how scary it can be, but the connection you’ll build with others is worth it. People relate to your journey, and when you share the wisdom you've gained, you show them how to walk their own path of growth and success.
Turning Your Scar into Strength
When I first began my journey as a business owner and coach, I never imagined I would look back at the most painful experiences of my life and see them as my greatest source of strength. Now, I share my story, not as a victim of false accusations, but as a survivor who has built a thriving business with resilience and grace.
Your scar is a symbol of your growth. Own it, share it, and let it inspire others. In doing so, you not only empower yourself but also the people around you.
